So you don't have a lot of hard drive space? Most of us don't. Here are a few
tips that can save you hard drive space. Note the this was done on a new
install of TW2002, after BIGBANG had been run, but before TEDIT or EXTERN
had been run.
TW2002 dumps 83 files totaling 1,294,153 bytes in your TW directory. You can
pare this down by removing the following files:
EMS40.SYS - delete - needed only if you have 1meg+ of memory, see TWDOCS.
If you can use it copy it to your DOS dir and install
it as a device in CONFIG.SYS
INSTALL.DIR - delete - list of command line options to start TW2002, the
EXPANDER will write the proper command line when it
calls TW2002.
TEDIT.DOC - delete - Doc file for TEDIT, which I've never used. TEDIT is
easy to use. If you aren't sure keep one copy.
TWZAPPER.DOC - delete - Documents for TWZAPPER database fixing program, at most
you need one copy.
TWZAPPER.EXE - special, see below - TWZapper itself
This will bring you to 1,254,707 bytes per universe. You can also delete
Bigbang.exe once you've made the universe - the game doesn't call it.
OK, now we are at 1,221,459 bytes, and we get crazy. Make a directory called
TWEXE off of your root, and add it to your path. Copy *.EXE to the new
directory, and delete all of them from every universe. Also put TWZAPPER,
AEXTERN, and TWUNBUG there. Each TW2002 game now takes up 1,064,539 bytes,
and yes, it will run.
So for 10 games you'd need 10,645,390 bytes, as compared to 12,941,530 bytes,
or a saving of just over 2 megabytes.
of course there is an advantage to obsolete hardware...
***************************************************************************
You are really tight still? This one is dangerous.
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS, DESQVIEW, DOUBLE DOS, or any
other multitasking software!
Make a directory called \ANS, doesn't matter where it is on your hard drive,
or even if it's on the same computer (we had this running across a LAN one
night, EXE files on the BBS computer, and the data files on another machine
across the room). Add a line in your Autoexec.bat saying:
C:\DOS\APPEND C:\BBS\ANS
Now copy the following files into the C:\BBS\ANS directory
*.ANS (in other words all files ending in ANS) - TW2002 ANSI pictures
OATHTEXT.DAT - oaths used by destroyed traders
TRADER.DAT - The Old Trader's information
MENUFILE.TXT - Menu
TWHELLO.MSG - Non-ansi logon message
TWINSTR.DOC - On-line help files
SHIPSTAT.DAT - Ship stats
You now have 701,516 bytes used per universe, and 576,079 bytes that are common
to all the universes. So you wanted to run 10 universes? Your total space
required would be 7,591,239 bytes , plus the expander. A lot better than the
12,941,530 bytes that would be required for 10 universe otherwise...
A 5 megabyte saving - now what can we do with five megabytes? Hum....
I should mention that Stacker works quite well too, saving an absolutely
amazing amount of HD space. Superstore should give simular results, as should
DOS6.0 (if the rumours I hear about it having HD compression routines built in
are true).
